For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
Our news is full of violence, disasters, crime and division. All of this negativity causes anxiety and fear to well up in our soul. It also causes our children to worry and fear. So how do we cope? How can we help our children cope with the fear that arises from violence and disasters that they see on the news?
One way, and perhaps the only way, is to go to the Word of God. Paul told Timothy that God did not give him a spirit (or attitude) of fear. God gives us power for living. God gives us love and self-discipline for living. So if God didn’t give us fear, who or what is making us fearful? Satan, of course. Remember his objective is to kill, steal and destroy (John 10:10). One of God’s gifts that Satan desires to steal from you is peace. He uses all kinds of things to destroy and kill God’s peace in our lives – like what we see on the news.
Fear in my life means that Satan is attacking me because God doesn’t give us a spirit of fear. What did Jesus do when Satan attacked him? He used the word of God to combat the attack of Satan. We must do the same. When you, or your children, are gripped with fear, it’s a call for you to do spiritual warfare against his attack. It’s a call to God’s Word. Here are some fighter verses to deal with fear in your life or in the life of your child.
1.“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
2.“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.” Psalm 56:3
3.“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
4.“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” John 14:27
5.“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” 1 John 4:18
6.“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.” Psalm 94:19
7. “But now, this is what the Lord says…Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1
8. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
9. “Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
10. “Tell everyone who is discouraged, be strong and don’t be afraid! God is coming to your rescue…” Isaiah 35:4
A spirit of fear reminds us to turn to God’s word. Replace those fearful thoughts with words of truth and peace. God knows what concerns us and he cares!
